What to look for in your choice of a photographer

I know there’s a heap of photographers in this area.  Different styles…different costs…. but pretty much all in the same area.   Lots of photographers that doesn’t even live in the area, do come down to shoot on the beach.  That is fine.  But take your time looking at each and everyone’s website before you make a choice!    It’s probably tempting to pick the more affordable ones, or even someone more expensive because that must mean they’re good.    But let me tell you want to look for, regarding the images.   A portfolio is a reflection of the work of a photographer.

Do you see grain in the pictures?  Grain is from digital noise,  and the grain is worse with lower quality cameras. All DSLR cameras are not equal.    Grain or digital noise, is one of the biggest offenders in a portrait, since it makes pictures un-smooth, looses contrast, and becomes soft.   You want to look for smooth images, with sharp outlines, especially around facial features.   Speaking about faces,  look at how shade/shadows are displayed on people’s faces in the portraits displayed.   Are there lots of dark shades on faces?   You don’t want a shadow of your nose next to your chin, or have “racoon” eyes.   Sometimes these things are hard to avoid, especially in harsh sun light, but if there’s excessive amount of that type of portaits in a gallery…. that will likely be how most of  yours will look as well.

The next thing to look for, especially regarding beach photos, is the horizon of the water.  Does it look as if it’s supposed to be slanted, in a creative shot, or does it look as if the photographer simply wasn’t paying attention and didn’t fix it in post?     You don’t want your beach pictures to look as if you’re slanting off the beach!

The last thing to look for, do the pictures look a bit flat and boring, and lacks “punch”?    That tend to kill an image that would otherwise been good.   But I  have also seen work of overly excessive amount of contrast, which will make the images look too dark in the shadows and the whites are completely blown out..as if they were glowing on their own.

With this information on hand, I think you the client will have a better chance of finding a photographer that you will be happy with!     Style is also important, do you want more modern or more classic  portraits?   Well, while style it is important, a good photographer knows and can read their clients and mend after their needs at the spot.

Good luck!

I’ve been so busy lately!   My daughter turned 2 and tomorrow we are having a joint birthday party for her and a friend.   On Wednesday I photographed a conference and a dinner and speech, with a lady from NOOA (http://www.noaa.gov/ )

I just finished up editing all those pictures, and I will try to share some of them.  Thanks, and I “see” y’all soon.

Maybe not photography related but this needs to be heard.

Please avoid Fedex at all cost.   They have lost two packages sent to me in two months. One is worth quite a bit and I haven’t been able to get a tracking number yet.  Even though I have a tracking number of the first package lost,  the Fedex “customer service”  was falsely telling me the package was forwarded over to the Postal Office and delivered.   It was also explained to me in a very rude and brusk way.  I had to call the postal office in Atlantic Beach to follow up and the lady in there was by far friendlier and helpful, and she said they were going to follow up and call me back.

On my second package however,  was sent to me just two weeks ago and should have been here by now and the address is correct.   So I called the local Fedex center in Beaufort to just ask if Fedex could possibly have some issues with my address, because we know it won’t show up in Google maps and such.    Unfortunately the guy was very rude and gave me the “What do you think I can do” attitude and there was that.    Thanks a lot for the “help”.

I will ensure my future packages will be sent to me by either the UPS or USPS.     I have NEVER had any problems with the brown truck or the postal office.
